Family Urges Others to Make Surprise Visits to Nursing Homes After Mom Is Found Alone ‘Gasping for Breath’

Our parents have always been there for us, no matter what, so the least we can do is take care of them, especially when they grow old and can’t be able to take care of themselves.

However, there are circumstances when that’s not always achievable, particularly when these old people have some sort of conditions which require some expert help.

People place their parents in a nursing home when they really don’t have any other alternative left.

They expect that the people working there would really give their best to provide a good living environment to their loved ones, thinking they would get the comfort and health care they deserve.

They trust them with the lives of their parents, grandparents, or any other family member.

So, you can imagine the shock of James Brown when he saw his 80 year-old mother almost dead, strangling on her saliva, in the nurses’ station. Outrageous!

His mother Esther was living in Canton, in the Altercare Nobles Pond. One night, he decided to pay her a surprise visit, together with Julia Wiggins, the family’s pastor, but as it turned out, they were the ones being surprised at the end.

When they got in the facility, they couldn’t believe their eyes! They saw Esther’s face down in her pillow, choking. James and Julia started screaming, asking for help for 10 minutes, before someone came.

James was devastated and started crying. When Esther heard her son’s voice, she found the strength to raise her head.

This story became famous all over the world, when Julia went public and shared some photos of it online, showing her frustration, to make people more aware of the problem. It’s disturbing to think that you could find your own mother like this!

After seeing the photos online and hearing about this unpleasant situation, the Department of aging and the Department of health in Ohio started an investigation, trying to discover why this old lady was left neglected. The investigation is still ongoing.

Obviously, Esther’s family filed a complaint against the nursing home.

Some of the people working in this healthcare centre claimed that patients with dementia are really strong and because of their own safety, they are sometimes put in that kind of a position.

We don’t have to make these surprise visits to assure ourselves that our loved ones are being taken care of; it’s the job of these nursing homes to always keep an eye on the people living there, to be responsible and to follow the required procedures.
